What About the 'Thinking' Soap Fan?
Posted Image

OPINION:

There have been many reveals of late about sexual harassment and the objectification of women and men. In some instances, such as with film producer Harvey Weinstein, rumors were rampant throughout Hollywood but it wasn't exposed until an investigative piece in the New York Times.

I thought of my own experiences and those of my friends; things I ignored or disregarded but were really harassment or an attempt to keep me in my place as a woman. More recently while reading social media, I thought of the soap industry, which is rather small with its circular casting and limited number of powers that be. I questioned: Who would be the individuals accused of predatory behavior behind the scenes on Daytime dramas? I've long heard stories about some executives who I won't name here because I have no evidence to support it, but it's disappointing that it won't likely be revealed. Soap Opera Digest and Soaps In Depth depend on the network for their livelihood--they are more public relations vehicles than publications with investigative journalism.

I say all this to mention what came to mind when I read a tweet by Robin Strasser recently.

#TucWatkins 1 of the best actors on the planet-gets better w/time-I loved #DavidAndDorian too but fans saying We won't watch #OLTL if they aren't together-Finally I said on my Hotline STOP he's on #DesperateHousewives Root for us-but let Dorian keep breathing when he's not around.

Right, it still makes my blood boil that fans of ROBIN STRASSER (Dorian Lord), who was on One Life to Live for DECADES, were not able to see her unless co-star Tuc Watkins (David Vickers) had time off from Desperate Housewives. And I'm not convinced it was the fans that made it so but those in charge who decided that's how the money would be spent and the talent would be showcased. This went on for years. When Watkins was available the storylines revolved around Watkins' David and Strasser as Dorian was relegated to play support and comedy shtick since that was Watkins' forte.
I will say this to the so-called soap press, if you can't call out names of those who are sexist behind the scenes, at least call it out when sexism is so blatant. Find a way to be supportive of the women upon whose backs the industry was built. Alas, where is Marlena Delacroix when you need her? Connie Passalacqua Hayman, aka Marlena Delacroix, was a thinking soap fan's writer for publications such as Soap Opera Weekly.
Anyway, I finally concluded that the stories that were written made it clear that I wasn't the intended viewer. I wish someone had the courage to place a magnifying glass on soap operas. What's seen in front of the cameras gives a clue as to what's going on behind the scenes.
